The episode played into the narrative promoted by Putin that he sent his army into Ukraine last year to "demilitarise and denazify" the country. Kyiv and its Western allies say Russia's actions constitute an unprovoked war of aggression designed to grab territory. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who is Jewish, says Moscow's claims that his administration is run by Nazis are absurd.

The governor general at the time awarded the Order of Canada, a top civilian honor that recognizes outstanding achievement and service to the nation, to Peter Savaryn, who was praised for promoting multiculturalism in Canada. Savaryn and Hunka had fought in the same Waffen SS unit. The Hunka incident has led to calls for Ottawa to release the Deschenes Commission report from the 1980s that probed the alleged presence of war criminals in Canada. Governor General Simon is Canada's official representative of head of state King Charles.

Trudeau said the Liberal government had no responsibility for vetting who the speaker had invited. The official opposition Conservatives say Trudeau was ultimately responsible for what happened, given he had invited Zelenskiy to address the Canadian parliament, and accused him of negligence.
